# Donat Mg water: where it comes from and why people drink it at the spring

Rogaška Slatina is the only place in the world where the natural mineral water Donat Mg rises. Here is what makes it special and what the spa town’s drinking tradition looks like.

## Where the water comes from

Rogaška Slatina is one of Slovenia’s best-known historic spa towns, surrounded by green hills. The town grew up around its mineral springs, and for centuries the water has been tied to its spa traditions.

Legend has it that Apollo ordered the winged horse Pegasus to strike the ground with his hoof — and a spring burst from the rock. That is why Pegasus became the symbol of the town.

For comparison: the daily magnesium requirement is roughly 310–320 mg for women and 400–420 mg for men. That is also why the water tastes unusual — slightly salty and rich.

**This is not water for quenching thirst.** It is drunk in small portions. Your drinking course is set by a doctor — do not increase the amount on your own.

## How the drinking tradition works

The first Donat pavilion was built in 1909, right above the spring in the spa park. Until 1953 water from the underground springs of that time was bottled here.

The modern glass drinking hall, Pivnica, opened in 1967. It has 11 fountains where guests pour the water themselves — and people still come here to drink Donat straight from the spring.
